A guide to Chinese clothing

"Chinese clothing" covers several traditions, from the hanfu of China's dynasties to the 20th-century qipao and today's new Chinese style. Here are the main types and where to find them at CHINASQUAD.

  • Hanfu (汉服)

Hanfu is the traditional dress of the Han Chinese, worn in many forms from the Han dynasty to the Ming dynasty. Most styles share a cross collar wrapped right over left, wide sleeves and a long skirt or robe. Since the early 2000s, a revival movement has brought hanfu back for festivals, weddings, graduations and everyday wear.

  • Mamian skirt (马面裙)

The mamian, or "horse-face" skirt, is a pleated Ming-dynasty skirt with flat panels at the front and back and pleats at the sides. Worn with an ao jacket, it is one of the easiest hanfu pieces to style today.

  • Ruqun (襦裙)

A ruqun pairs a short top with a long skirt. Tang-dynasty styles tie the skirt high at the chest, which creates a long, flowing line.

  • Beizi (褙子)

A beizi is a long, open-front jacket with straight lines, especially popular in the Song dynasty. It is layered over a top and a pleated skirt or trousers.

  • Qipao / cheongsam (旗袍)

The qipao, also called the cheongsam, is a one-piece fitted dress with a mandarin collar and side slits. It took shape in 1920s Shanghai and is still worn for weddings, Lunar New Year and evening events.

  • Tang suit (唐装)

Despite its name, the Tang suit comes from the Qing-dynasty magua jacket: a mandarin collar, frog buttons and a straight cut. It is a popular choice for Lunar New Year.

  • New Chinese style (新中式)

New Chinese style describes contemporary clothing that borrows details from hanfu and the qipao, such as mandarin collars, frog buttons, brocade and embroidery, and works them into everyday pieces.

Chinese clothing FAQ

What is traditional Chinese clothing called?

There isn't a single name. Hanfu (汉服) is the traditional dress of the Han Chinese. The qipao or cheongsam (旗袍) is a fitted 20th-century dress, and the Tang suit (唐装) is a jacket with a mandarin collar and frog buttons. Many people today also wear modern hanfu and "new Chinese style" pieces that bring these details into everyday clothes.

What is the difference between hanfu and a qipao?

Hanfu is loose and layered, with a cross collar wrapped right over left and wide sleeves; its styles date back to dynasties such as the Han, Tang, Song and Ming. A qipao is a one-piece, close-fitting dress with a stand-up mandarin collar and side slits that developed in 1920s Shanghai. Shop hanfu or qipao.

Which hanfu style is best for beginners?

A Ming-style set, an ao jacket with a mamian skirt, is an easy place to start: it is simple to put on and pairs well with modern shoes and bags. Modern hanfu sets are even easier for everyday wear, and Tang chest-high ruqun are lovely for summer and formal events.

Can anyone wear hanfu?

Yes. People of all backgrounds wear hanfu for festivals, weddings, graduations, photo shoots and everyday life. Choose a style you love and wear it with an interest in its history.

How do hanfu sizes work?

Sizes vary by designer, and many hanfu sets are sized by height. Check the size chart in centimetres on each product page and compare it with a garment that fits you well. Our Chinese clothing size guide explains how Chinese sizes compare with US and EU sizes, and you can contact us for help before ordering.

Can I return Hanfu Hall pieces?

Hanfu Hall pieces belong to our Certified Hanfu Collection and can't be returned or exchanged for personal reasons such as size, fit, colour or a change of mind, so please check the size chart before ordering. If an item arrives damaged, defective or incorrect, contact us within 24 hours of delivery with one continuous, unedited video and we will cover return shipping and refund, exchange or replace it. This does not affect your legal rights.

Do you ship hanfu worldwide?

Yes. We ship to most countries, with free standard shipping on orders of USD $99 or more to supported destinations. Delivery estimates are shown at checkout, and our shipping policy has the full details.
